MPA 2017 will be the sixth MPA meeting in the biennial conference series and the first meeting held in North America. MPA meetings focus on ''in silico'' and ''in vitro'' analysis of metabolic network structure-function relationships as represented by stoichiometric modeling approaches, physiological measurements and omics datasets. MPA 2017 will include sessions on interacting cells from microbial consortia to tissues, biofuels synthesis, environmental and medical biofilms, thermodynamic constraints on metabolism among many other topics. MPA 2017 will consist of four days of formal oral and poster presentations and an educational day trip to '''Yellowstone National Park''' to learn about extremophiles living in geological hot springs; this trip is cohosted by the Thermal Biology Institute.

The MPA meetings are organized similar to Gordon Research Conferences. There are typically ~100 attendees who all stay and eat together on a university campus in a very collegial, interactive and collaborative atmosphere. The MPA 2017 meeting will be held on the campus of Montana State University, Bozeman. Bozeman is a vibrant, progressive mountain town 90 miles (150 km) north of Yellowstone National Park with numerous recreational and cultural opportunities (http://www.montana.edu/about/bozeman/).

Metabolic Pathway Analysis

"Metabolic Pathway Analysis" refers to two things. One is the obvious: the analysis of metabolism, primarily by mathematical and computational modelling. The other is a series of international meetings dedicated to this subject.

The meetings have a primary focus on the structural (topological) analysis of metabolic networks, and in particular techniques allied to linear algebra, linear programming and computer modelling. This focus may be applied at many levels of abstraction, from individual reaction mechanisms, through pathways, organelles, whole organisms and, most recently, mixed populations.

One of the major objectives of our meetings is to provide time and space to allow delegates to participate in round-table discussions and informal meetings in addition to the plenary sessions. Many, but by no means all, of the participants of previous MPA meetings are also active in the International Study Group for Systems Biology, whose meetings are held biennially on even years. It is hoped that in future MPA and ISGSB will continue to be held on alternate years, providing a natural counterpoint to one another.
